I'm pretty sure it's to reduce the risk of it being banned. I'm not sure exactly how it works but you're meant to post and star out the names to prevent anything from happening to them. Especially with higher tier usernames, in those cases people star out all but one character or keep the name private unless proof of funds are provided.

Its so it doesnt get reported and banned because selling shit like gamertags isnt allowed

I'm sure it's against the terms of service or not preffered. I'm not sure how it works in terms of social mediums preventing this from happening tbh but i'm sure someone else on the forum will come across this and know what they're talking about :)

We made it so Guests are unable to view the Marketplace, that can stop people from lurking the forums. But mainly its to stop people from just searching your @ specifically

For the longest time, many gamertags were banned for being put in the market. Lots of ms employees used to snoop around these types of forums. Not really sure nowadays
