It really depends on what you're into and a lot of people opt for the more mainstream animes like naruto and bleach which are 500ish episodes each inc fillers, but if you want something a little shorter to get you into the swing of things id have to say sword art online is a great starting point w/ 20ish episodes per season and only 3 seasons but you can get away with watching just the 1st as i find that the 2nd and 3rd are almost carbon copys but just different games. I'm personally into some more story-heavy and psychological animes such as: Zankyou no Terror, Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin, Neon Genesis Evangelion etc.
