it depends on your country. Usually the purchase fee is the tax and any earnings are tax free

but if you are a trader, then you pay tax as it is seen as income

If you live in the states and you use Coinbase, they report everything to the IRS. They had a lawsuit a while back that forced them to. This doesn't automatically mean you pay taxes, but the government is well aware of exactly how much goes in and out.
