Before reading: Everything written on this thread is experience based and you are more than welcome to add/correct information.
As you all know, the Tiktok algorithm is very complex. The platform uses the algorithm to evaluate the quality of the uploaded content just like any other popular social media. However, the uploading process is a lot different and from what I noticed, here it is:
- When you upload a video on the platform, your content is shown to a small audience on the For you page and it acts as a test for the algorithm to see how well your video is received by the audience.
- Depending on how many times your content is seen, liked, commented, shared and downloaded, Tiktok will show it to a larger audience, increasing the chance for it to go viral and stay on the For you page.
- However, your video can have a good like/view ratio and still not go viral. This is explained by the fact that the algorithm also considers how fast your video is interacted with. For example, a video with 100 likes in a single day is less likely to stay on the for you page than a video with 1k likes in the same amount of time.
- In order to be viral, your video has to be watched, but a 10s video with an average watch time of 4s shows to the algorithm that the audience doesn't like the video. Therefore, it doesn't reach more users. This is why the "wait for it" videos work very well.
Starting your own page:
Personal: To start a viral personal account, you have to be original. Tiktok is saturated with dancing clips and you won't go viral unless you are super pretty or super thic lol. Funny and entertaining content works well and it's the best way to get followers. Be consistent and be patient. Use texts, songs/sounds and interact with your followers. Basically, it's the same thing as a personal Instagram account but you have the flexibility of a video. Be creative!
Repost: If you planned on doing the same thing you're doing with your instagram page, but on Tiktok, I have bad news. I've tried to go viral with different niches and it's a lot trickier than using content from other accounts and posting it on yours. To begin with, meme pages aren't doing good on Tiktok (Most of them). The platform itself is already full of funny content and I noticed that users seem to get attached on an emotional level to the content creator they are watching. This is why Charli D'amelio became an icon of Tiktok. Repost accounts must bring something to users in order to reach the for you page. Make up tutorials or money making tutorials are great examples. Basically, find something to entertain your audience with every video and you're all set. I'm not saying it's impossible to go viral with a repost page (It's actually pretty easy). The only problem is that Tiktok doesn't like them so they give you a hard time with their guidelines.
One last thing you need to know about reposting on TikTok: I strongly recommend reading the community guidelines concerning copyrights and what you can't post on the platform. Tiktok is really strict on nudity, guns, drugs and violent content. Also, you can look at big repost accounts such as @/complex or @/Pubity to undestand how they do it.
I know I didn't talk about everything on the subject but I hope I helped some people understand a little bit better this platform.
